The best educational toys that are not toys

It’s a common misconception that parents must buy baby toys that light up, make sounds, and play music. While having one or two of these toys can be interesting for your baby, you can often find ‘toys’ around your home that your baby will love.

  1. 1. Pots and pans

Give your baby a wooden spoon and some pots and pans and watch as they drum away. Babies love to experiment with cause and effect at this age - they will love hitting the pots and pans and making sounds.

  1. 2. Containers

Babies love containers. It probably has something to do with the fact that they are exploring containment, but any container with things to put in and dump out can be a lot of fun.

  1. 3. TV remote

Your baby sees you using it everyday and will be curious about how it works. They will love pressing the buttons. Just take the batteries out and let them press away.

  1. 4. Pillows

If you have a crawler, you can set up a ‘pillow obstacle course’. Let your baby crawl over pillows to practice coordination and gross motor skills.

  1. 5. Anything outdoors

Babies love the outdoors. Perhaps it's nature that's interesting, or perhaps it's the warm sunlight. Let your baby play outside when the weather permits, even if that means just going for a walk.

While these household items are great, as your baby grows, it’s important to ensure they continue to be stimulated with the right toys. This will help keep their brain busy especially during these sensitive periods of brain development
